Uzbekistan Improves Position in 2026 Global Terrorism Index

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan improved its position in the 2026 Global Terrorism Index (GTI), moving from 93rd to 96th place. A lower ranking indicates a more favorable security situation, and the country remains in the category of states with a very low level of terrorist threat.

In Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan share the 100th position, reflecting minimal terrorist impact. Tajikistan ranks 41st, placing it in the low-threat category.

The GTI is an annual analytical report assessing the scale of terrorist activity worldwide. Rankings are based on metrics such as the number of attacks, fatalities, and injuries.

The 2026 GTI identifies Pakistan as the country with the highest terrorism-related threat, followed by Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and Mali. Africa accounted for the highest number of terrorism-related fatalities in 2025, with Burkina Faso experiencing over 300 deaths from attacks. Niger recorded 71 deaths from Islamic State attacks in the Tillabéri region, while the Democratic Republic of Congo saw 71 fatalities during an Islamist attack on a funeral procession.

Globally, over 2,900 terrorist incidents were recorded in 2025, resulting in approximately 5,500 deaths. Despite ongoing risks, the overall situation improved, with fatalities declining by 28% and attacks by 22%. Positive trends were observed in 81 countries, while 19 experienced deterioration.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the primary hotspot for terrorist activity, though ten countries saw reductions in fatalities, with increases in four. The Islamic State continued to be the deadliest group, operating in 15 countries—significantly fewer than the previous year, when it was active in 22 nations.
