Uzbekistan improves its standing in 10 international indices

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At its seventh plenary session, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis reviewed the National Report on Uzbekistan’s progress in key international rankings and indices.

Senators discussed in detail the efforts undertaken to strengthen the country’s global image, boost its investment appeal, and assess the effectiveness of public governance. It was emphasized that systematic improvements in key international ratings play an important role in advancing reforms and building trust with international partners.

The Ministries of Economy and Finance, and Justice presented comprehensive data on achievements in the socio-economic and legal-political spheres. According to the report, in 2024, Uzbekistan improved its position in 10 out of 20 priority international indices, maintained its standing in two, and results for two indices are yet to be published.

Among the most notable improvements was a six-place rise in the E-Government Development Index, where Uzbekistan ranked 63rd out of 193 countries, moving from the “high” to the “very high” development category. In the Women, Business and the Law Index, Uzbekistan jumped 48 positions to 91st place out of 190 countries, achieving a score of 82.5 — a result attributed to policies advancing women’s rights and gender equality.

Uzbekistan also climbed six places in the Index of Economic Freedom, ranking 103rd. However, the need for further reforms was underlined, particularly in public budget management and reducing public debt.

It was noted that a national system for engaging with international indices has been established, and parliamentary and public oversight has been strengthened. The National Report, prepared regularly, provides an objective analysis of progress and recommendations for legal and institutional improvements.

However, the report also revealed negative trends in some indices. Challenges include corruption in certain sectors, shortcomings in press freedom, and instances of legal non-compliance, which continue to hinder Uzbekistan’s international performance.

In response, the Senate adopted a resolution calling for the development of sector-specific recommendations, strengthened oversight of reform implementation, increased accountability among relevant agencies, and additional measures to eliminate factors negatively affecting Uzbekistan’s global rankings.
