Uzbekistan fully bans iodine-free salt
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a law “On introduction of changes and amendments, as well as abolishment of some legislative acts of Uzbekistan” on 9 June 2015, which introduced amendments to the law “On preventing iodine deficit diseases”.
The law was passed by the Legislative Chamber on 7 May 2015 and approved by the Senate on 15 May 2015.
The law “On preventing iodine deficit diseases” envisaged mandatory iodinization of salt, produced and realized in Uzbekistan. But it provided access to people, who have medical or other contra-indication to iodized salt, to iodine-free salt. This clause was excluded from the law now.
The law of Uzbekistan “On preventing iodine deficit diseases” came into force on 4 May 2007.
According to article 15 of the law, the table salt, produced and realized in Uzbekistan, should undergo mandatory iodinization.
