Uzbekistan Explores Joining EITI for Mining Transparency

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 12 March, Uzbekistan held a working meeting involving First Deputy Minister of Mining and Geology Feruza Khamidova, representatives of the National Mining and Metallurgical Company (NGMK), staff from the relevant ministry, as well as Presidential Advisor Suma Chakrabarti and members of his expert group.

The main topic of discussion was the results of the work already conducted and the further plans related to Uzbekistan’s potential accession to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). Participants exchanged views on improving transparency and enhancing governance mechanisms within the mining sector.

Suma Chakrabarti thanked the Ministry of Mining and Geology for its cooperation in the activities related to the country’s potential entry into EITI. He also highlighted the Uzbek government’s interest in advancing this process.

Following the discussions, the parties agreed to prepare a practical action plan, which will define the next steps in developing cooperation and promoting the initiative.
