Uzbekistan Considers Amendments to Personal Data Law to Promote Digital Payments

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis has reviewed in its first reading a draft law proposing amendments and additions to the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Personal Data.” The initiative aims to align legislation with the development of the digital economy and financial technologies.

During the discussion, it was noted that Uzbekistan is steadily implementing reforms to expand cashless payments, develop the fintech sector, and increase tourist flows and related services. These trends require the introduction of modern digital payment tools and greater cooperation with international online payment systems.

The draft law proposes a clear definition of the types of personal data that must be stored within Uzbekistan. At the same time, it allows certain categories of data to be processed and stored abroad, provided that requirements for information security, international standards, and regulations established by authorized state bodies are met.

The changes are expected to attract international payment systems to Uzbekistan, improve the investment climate, expand the digital services market, and create more convenient and modern payment options for both citizens and foreign tourists.

Following the review, the draft law was approved by deputies and sent to the Senate for further consideration.
