Uzbekistan Approves New Safety Requirements for Handling Radioactive Waste

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Justice has registered the “Safety Requirements for Handling Radioactive Waste” under registration No. 3694 dated 28 October 2025.

The document sets standards aimed at ensuring radiation and environmental safety in the management of radioactive waste generated during the operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants, small modular nuclear reactors, research reactors, and other nuclear facilities.

Key safety requirements outlined in the document include continuous individual monitoring of personnel radiation doses, classification of waste according to activity levels, use of engineering and protective barriers to prevent radiation spread, and provision of personal protective equipment and dosimetric monitoring for workers.

The form and procedures for radiation monitoring must be defined in the facility’s design documentation and reflected in operational manuals.

Operating organizations are required to develop corresponding operational documents, including instructions and guidelines for the safe handling of radioactive waste.

Additionally, reports must include regulatory norms for the generation of radioactive waste from the use of nuclear energy, including planned annual accumulation volumes.
