Uzbekistan approves law to prevent torture and protect prisoners’ rights
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, during its fifth plenary session, reviewed and approved the Law “On Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan ‘On Detention During Criminal Proceedings.’” The newly adopted legislation aims to strengthen measures to prevent torture and other forms of inhumane treatment of detainees.
During the session, it was emphasized that Uzbekistan has undertaken extensive efforts in recent years to enhance the protection of citizens' rights and freedoms, with a particular focus on preventing torture, violence, and degrading treatment.
The law underscores that no one shall be subjected to cruel or inhuman treatment, aligning with international human rights standards.
One of the key provisions of the new legislation is the introduction of mandatory medical examinations for detainees before their placement in pre-trial detention facilities. This measure is designed to enhance transparency, ensure oversight of detention conditions, and prevent potential violations of detainees’ rights.
The adoption of this law is a continuation of Uzbekistan’s legal reforms aimed at strengthening human rights protections and enhancing the country’s international reputation. It contributes to safeguarding human dignity and increasing public trust in the justice system.
The implementation of the law is expected to reinforce the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms, ensure fair judicial proceedings, and strengthen mechanisms for preventing abuses in detention facilities.
Following the discussion, senators unanimously approved the law, emphasizing its significance for the development of the national legal system and Uzbekistan’s adherence to international human rights commitments.
This decision reaffirms Uzbekistan’s commitment to building a rule-of-law state and upholding the principles of justice and human rights.
