Uzbekistan and World Bank discuss energy efficiency and green technologies
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 27 January 2025, representatives of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Economy and Finance held a meeting with the World Bank to discuss the development of sustainable heating systems.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Samandar Sadullaev and heads of various structural divisions of the ministry. The World Bank delegation included Global Operations Manager Stephanie Hill, Lead Energy Specialist Manuel Berlenquero, and other experts.
Key topics of discussion included enhancing energy efficiency, integrating green economy principles into heating systems, and addressing climate adaptation.
The parties explored potential collaboration on programs aimed at improving energy efficiency in residential and multi-family buildings, supported by technical and financial assistance from the World Bank.
The World Bank presented an analysis of centralized heating systems in Europe, highlighting Poland’s experience with heat pumps and the outcomes of this initiative. Discussions also covered the modernization of centralized heating systems and the creation of new green jobs for small and medium-sized businesses.
Uzbek representatives expressed support for cooperation with the World Bank on phasing out heating subsidies and developing tailored solutions considering building types and climate conditions. A key proposal was the development of a new tariff methodology for heating systems, the introduction of combined cooling and heating systems, and the promotion of energy-efficient technologies in households.
Additionally, the two sides discussed establishing a unified national program for small energy-efficient projects, implementing climate adaptation strategies, and modernizing centralized heating systems to better meet consumer needs. Emphasis was placed on decentralizing decision-making to account for regional infrastructure diversity and varying building conditions.
As a result of the meeting, it was agreed to continue working on recommendations and finalize joint projects. The parties will hold follow-up discussions via video conference and collaborate on comprehensive strategies to develop sustainable heating systems in the future.
