Uzbekistan and the U.S. Discuss Expanding Cooperation in Legal Education

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A delegation from Uzbekistan met with Padideh Alai, Director of the Program on International and Comparative Legal Studies, and other representatives at the American University Washington College of Law, the Dunyo news agency reported.

The discussions focused on prospects for collaboration between Uzbekistan and the United States in legal education, including the launch of joint educational and professional programs. The American side highlighted the school’s high academic standards, noting its ranking among the U.S. top 10 in international commercial law, as well as its extensive expertise in international trade and investment law, arbitration, and comparative law.

Special attention was given to expanding academic mobility and developing master’s programs. Plans include strengthening partnerships with leading Uzbek universities, such as Tashkent State University of Law and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, creating opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, and designing joint master’s and short-term courses combining theoretical training with practical experience. Financial support for applicants is also being considered, particularly in international commercial and public law.

Significant emphasis was placed on improving the skills of public servants and developing human capital in international law. In collaboration with the El-Yurt Umidi Foundation, comprehensive educational programs for civil servants and practicing lawyers are being planned, including short- and long-term courses, specialized training, internships, and knowledge exchanges with leading university experts. Special focus will be on training specialists in international trade law, WTO law, investment regulation, and international dispute resolution. Programs will be offered both in-person and online, increasing access to educational resources and flexibility for participants.

The discussions also covered support for investment cooperation and assistance for investors. The American side expressed interest in working with the newly established American-Uzbek Business and Investment Council, offering legal support for projects and analytical materials, and indicated readiness to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate joint activities.

University representatives confirmed their practice of providing educational and scientific literature and expressed willingness to supply Uzbek institutions with books on international and commercial law. A visit by the law school’s leadership to Uzbekistan is planned for May 2026, alongside initiatives to promote educational tourism, which will strengthen academic ties and expand collaboration opportunities between universities.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides confirmed their mutual interest in long-term cooperation and agreed to continue work on the practical implementation of the proposed initiatives.
