Uzbekistan and Sinohydro Expand Cooperation on Hydropower Plant Modernization

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — JSC “Uzbekhydroenergo” has signed a package of agreements aimed at modernizing hydropower plants, marking a new phase in the development of Uzbekistan’s hydropower sector.

The ceremony formalized strategic cooperation agreements between JSC “Uzbekhydroenergo” and one of the leading international engineering companies of the People’s Republic of China, Sinohydro Co., Ltd.

Following open and transparent tender procedures, Sinohydro Co., Ltd. was selected as the winner, fully meeting the established technical and quality requirements and bringing extensive experience in implementing large-scale hydropower projects.

Under the agreement, the modernization project of the Shakhrikhan Hydropower Cascade—HPP-5A and HPP-6A in the Andijan region—will be implemented on an EPC (“turnkey”) basis. This format ensures comprehensive execution of design, construction, supply of technological equipment, and subsequent commissioning of the facilities.

The project will significantly improve the operational performance of the hydropower plants, modernize technological and management systems, and enhance the reliability and resilience of the energy infrastructure.

As a result of the modernization, the total installed capacity of these HPPs will increase from 7.6 MW to 16.4 MW. The additional 7.8 MW will generate approximately 33 million kWh of electricity annually, enough to supply over 13,000 households, while saving around 11 million cubic meters of natural gas and more than 27,500 tons of coal each year.

The project represents a significant contribution to Uzbekistan-China bilateral cooperation, the introduction of innovative technologies, and the adoption of modern international standards in hydropower. The modernization will also strengthen energy security, increase the share of clean energy, and ensure sustainable power supply.

The partnership between JSC “Uzbekhydroenergo” and Sinohydro Co., Ltd. elevates strategic collaboration in the hydropower sector to a new level and lays the groundwork for implementing major investment projects in the future.
