Uzbekistan and Malaysia Discuss Cooperation in the Field of Human Rights

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 20 January, a delegation from Uzbekistan, led by the Commissioner of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman), held a meeting with Malaysian Member of Parliament and Chair of the “Uzbekistan–Malaysia” Friendship Group, Dr. Kelvin Yi Li.

During the meeting, Dr. Kelvin Yi Li highly praised the human rights reforms underway in Uzbekistan, emphasizing their systematic and consistent nature.

Particular attention was given to the role of national human rights institutions in both countries in protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms, their interaction with parliaments, and the prospects for exchanging experiences in this area.

It was noted that inter-parliamentary relations were further strengthened during the visit of a Malaysian parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives to Uzbekistan in 2023, as well as the visit of the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis to Malaysia in 2024.

The Uzbekistan–Malaysia inter-parliamentary friendship group has been operating since 2020 and serves as an effective platform for cooperation between the two countries.

Within the framework of the group, legislative matters, including human rights issues, are regularly discussed.
