Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan Expand Capacity of Cross-Border Power Lines

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan are working to increase the capacity of cross-border power transmission lines, Kyrgyzstan’s Energy Minister Taalaybek Ibraev told Uzbekiston 24.

The announcement follows a meeting between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the Kyrgyz energy minister, during which the two sides discussed further strengthening bilateral relations, including cooperation in the energy sector.

Stable electricity supply and transit between the countries have been established, and new renewable energy projects are being explored. Special attention is being paid to water-energy cooperation, including the implementation of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Project. Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of expanding collaboration on regionally significant projects.

Ibraev noted that the modernization of power lines in border regions is being carried out with support from the World Bank’s REMIT program.

He also stated that the launch of Kambarata-1 will provide electricity to industrial enterprises and support food security programs. The hydropower plant will have a capacity of 1,860 MW and will include a reservoir with a volume of 5.4 billion cubic meters. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan plan to attract funding from international financial institutions for the project’s construction.
