Uzbekistan Adopts Law to Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed the Law "On the Limitation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions."

The document establishes the legal, organizational, and economic framework for regulating greenhouse gas emissions, as well as mechanisms for promoting “green” initiatives. In particular, the measures for limiting emissions include state-level accounting, the establishment of target benchmarks, and support for activities aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing carbon capture capacity.

The law grants legal entities and individuals, including private entrepreneurs, the right to implement “green” projects. However, any volume of reduced emissions achieved as a result of such initiatives within Uzbekistan's territory becomes the property of the state.

Information about “green” projects will be recorded in the National Carbon Units Registry. The law also introduces a procedure for the verification of carbon units generated through project implementation, with subsequent inclusion of this data in official reports.

The adoption of this law reflects Uzbekistan’s commitment to fulfilling its international climate obligations and transitioning toward a sustainable green economy.
