Uzbek Transport Minister Reviews Progress of China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan Railway Construction

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 30 June 2025, a delegation from Uzbekistan led by Minister of Transport Ilkhom Makhkamov visited the Jalal-Abad region of the Kyrgyz Republic.

As part of the visit, the working group reviewed the progress of the international China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway construction project.

Particular attention was paid to two major components of the route — the Ferghana and Kosh-Dobo tunnels — each extending over 12 kilometers. These structures are among the largest and most technically complex engineering elements of the project.

The Uzbek delegation also closely examined the proposed development of a new railway station at the site of the existing Makmal station and reviewed plans for the construction of the Jalal-Abad railway station. These facilities are expected to play a key role in shaping the region’s modern logistics infrastructure.

It should be noted that full-scale construction officially commenced on 30 June along the entire Kyrgyz section of the railway. According to project plans, approximately 40% of the railway will consist of tunnels and bridges, making it a unique endeavor in terms of engineering complexity and regional significance.

To conclude the visit, Minister Makhkamov held a working meeting with Kyrgyz Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Askat Turgunbaev, Deputy Director General of the national company Kyrgyz Temir Jolu Nurlan Arapbaev, Director General of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan company Zhou Xin, and Zhang Ei Tao, head of the EPC contractor.

During the discussions, the parties addressed current issues related to the construction process and exchanged views on further coordination efforts.
