Uzbek Senators participate in gender equality seminar in Brussels

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis are currently in Brussels, Belgium, taking part in a seminar titled “Gender-Sensitive Parliaments,” organized by the European Parliament and the Senate of Belgium.

The event brought together representatives from the European Parliament, the Belgian Senate, the German Bundestag, the Lithuanian Seimas, the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic, as well as the Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality and the head of the EU’s “Inter Pares” project.

Senator Orzigul Kozikhonova, Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth, Women, Culture and Sports, and Deputy Chair of the Budget and Economic Affairs Committee Kobul Tursunov emphasized Uzbekistan’s robust legislative framework and practical mechanisms for promoting gender equality, highlighting the parliament’s active role in this area.

Vice President of the European Parliament and member of the High-Level Group on Gender Equality, Nicolae Ștefănuță, praised Uzbekistan’s ongoing reforms during his visit to the country in April, noting its transparent and democratic path of development.

Hannah Neumann, Deputy Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, commended Uzbekistan’s large-scale reforms and remarked that its experience could serve as an example for other nations. She also expressed her intention to visit Uzbekistan.

The seminar addressed advancements in gender equality and women’s rights in both the EU and Uzbekistan, as well as issues related to the prevention of discrimination and violence.

The event concluded with an exchange of legislative experience, discussions on public engagement, gender audits, and proposals to enhance inter-parliamentary cooperation and improve relevant legislation.
