Uzbek Nuclear Plant in Jizzakh to Save 3.6 Bcm of Gas

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The construction of a nuclear power plant in Jizzakh region, carried out in cooperation with Russia, is expected to help Uzbekistan save approximately 3.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, according to a report by Rahim Hakimov, Deputy Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan, prepared for the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The project is designed to cover up to 15% of domestic electricity demand and to diversify the country’s energy mix. Preparatory work is already underway at the Farish district site to reach the “first concrete” stage.

In 2024, the state corporation Rosatom and Uzbekistan’s Agency for Nuclear Energy signed the world’s first export contract for the construction of a small modular nuclear power plant based on a Russian design. In 2025, an additional agreement was signed outlining the main conditions for the project, including the construction of two high-power VVER-1000 Generation 3+ reactors and two 55 MW RITM-200N reactor units.

The implementation of this project is considered a key step toward ensuring the country’s energy independence and expanding the share of carbon-free electricity generation in Uzbekistan.
