Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs investigates claims of 1,110 citizens fighting in Russian armed forces in Ukraine

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ukrainian government project "I Want to Live" has published a list of 1,110 citizens from Uzbekistan, claiming that they signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces and participated in combat operations in Ukraine.

According to Gazeta.uz, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan has announced that it is conducting a verification of the information received.

If it is confirmed that Uzbek nationals participated in military actions on the side of Russia, they could face criminal liability under Article 154 of the Criminal Code ("Mercenarism"), which stipulates punishment of up to 10 years in prison.

The Ukrainian project also mentioned that some of the Uzbek citizens involved in the war have already obtained Russian citizenship. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded that dual citizenship is not allowed in Uzbekistan, and appropriate measures will be taken against individuals with Russian citizenship.

The Ministry emphasized that Uzbek authorities regularly remind citizens of the inadmissibility of participating in armed conflicts outside the country.
