Uzbek lawmakers approve ratification of alliance treaty with Azerbaijan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan has approved a bill ratifying the Treaty on Allied Relations between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan, signed on 23 August 2024, in Tashkent.

This treaty was concluded following the first meeting of the Uzbekistan-Azerbaijan High Interstate Council, held in Tashkent, and marks a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation.

It reflects Uzbekistan’s pragmatic and open foreign policy, aimed at fostering good-neighborly relations. In recent years, the two countries have significantly deepened ties across political, economic, and cultural-humanitarian spheres, with this treaty elevating their relations to the highest level.

The document consists of a preamble and 24 articles, outlining the fundamental principles of allied relations. These include a commitment to refrain from hostile actions against each other, non-participation in military blocs or alliances directed against the partner country, and the peaceful resolution of any threats arising from armed attacks by third states. Additionally, the treaty calls for enhanced cooperation in combating international terrorism, extremism, and organized crime.

The ratification of this agreement marks a new phase in bilateral partnership, reinforcing the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and sustainable economic development of both nations. The bill has now been sent to the Senate for further consideration.
