Uzbek Customs Foil Gold Smuggling “Live Container” Attempt
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Authorities at Tashkent International Airport prevented an attempt to smuggle gold hidden inside the bodies of passengers.
During a joint personal inspection conducted by customs and the State Security Service, two women were identified displaying noticeable anxiety before a flight to Istanbul.
Investigators found that one woman attempted to transport 252 grams of gold jewelry, while the other concealed 158 grams internally. An additional 64 grams of undeclared jewelry were found in their bags. The total estimated value of the seized gold is around 720 million UZS (approximately $60,000 USD).
This method of smuggling posed a severe risk to the women’s health, as the sharp edges of the jewelry could cause internal injuries, bleeding, or infection.
The passengers claimed the jewelry did not belong to them. Authorities continue to investigate to clarify the full circumstances and return the valuables to their rightful owners.
Officials emphasized that no material gain justifies endangering human life or dignity. The women’s health, safety, and honor remain the top priority.
