UN Proclaims 1 October as International Coffee Day
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 1 October as International Coffee Day.
The resolution was adopted on 10 March at the UN headquarters. Uzbekistan was among the co-authors of the document, along with neighboring Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.
According to a UN press release, the resolution highlights the cultural, social, and historical significance of coffee, from its origins to its role in modern society.
The document emphasizes that coffee is not only an important agricultural commodity and a source of livelihood for millions of people, but also a symbol of social interaction, cultural expression, and traditions passed down through generations.
The resolution also underscores the contribution of coffee production and processing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including efforts to combat hunger, promote decent employment, and support economic growth.
Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), noted that coffee represents a significant share of global trade.
“Coffee is more than a beverage. It is part of global trade — from bean to cup — that supports the livelihoods of millions of farming households and connects rural communities with markets around the world,” he said.
The resolution was submitted to the General Assembly after being approved at the 44th session of the FAO Conference in 2025, establishing a new international framework recognizing coffee’s importance for both the global economy and culture.
