UN High Commissioner Zeid: “We support rapid reforms of the leadership of Uzbekistan”
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan comprising Justice Minister Ruslanbek Davletov and director of the National Human Rights Center Akmal Saidov in Geneva met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein.

The meeting was held within the 37th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the press service of the Justice Ministry of Uzbekistan said.

The sides discussed the state and prospects of Uzbekistan’s cooperation with the UN in the field of human rights.

The High Commissioner familiarized himself with the large-scale reforms, which have been carried out recently in Uzbekistan in all directions, including the expansion of guarantees for the reliable protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms, improving access to justice, and improving the efficiency and quality of judicial proceedings.

In this context, he was informed about the main results of the implementation of the Country Development Strategy in the Year of Dialogue with the People and of Human Interests, as well as the Roadmap for further development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and OHCHR.

The High Commissioner in a positive light assessed the ongoing democratic transformations in Uzbekistan in all spheres of life. So, he noted importance of ongoing reforms in the judicial and legal system, work to improve national legislation in accordance with international standards.

The head of OHCHR emphasized that Uzbekistan is on the right path of development. He stated the importance of preserving interethnic harmony and religious tolerance, which reigns in Uzbekistan.

He welcomed the initiative of the Head of Uzbekistan on holding the Asian Forum on Human Rights in Samarkand in the autumn of 2018, as well as nominating the country as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2021-2023.

The High Commissioner reaffirmed the readiness of his Office to continue the rich and fruitful cooperation with Uzbekistan in all areas of human rights.
