UN General Assembly establishes International Day of Remembrance for Earthquake Victims initiated by Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 29 April 2025, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution proclaiming April 29 as the International Day of Remembrance for Earthquake Victims, at the initiative of Uzbekistan.
The resolution was supported by over 80 countries from all regions of the world.
This document is based on the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, aimed at commemorating the victims of earthquakes and highlighting the need for international cooperation in this area, as well as establishing a day of memory and solidarity.
On March 16, 2023, at an extraordinary summit of the Organization of Turkic States, President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of strengthening practical cooperation with international organizations specializing in emergency situations.
The International Day of Remembrance for Earthquake Victims will be observed for the first time on April 29, 2026. This date was chosen to mark the 60th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Tashkent in 1966.
Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural disasters. Although they represent a relatively small percentage of all natural calamities, they often result in the most tragic consequences.
The resolution calls on UN member states, UN system organizations, and other international bodies to mark the International Day by organizing information and advocacy campaigns aimed at raising public awareness, strengthening disaster resilience, and improving preparedness.
The adoption of this document has been highly praised by the international community. With earthquakes occurring more frequently worldwide, the relevance of this initiative is increasingly underscored.
This resolution further confirms Uzbekistan’s growing influence on the global stage and its contribution to advancing global solutions for the benefit of all humanity.
