Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23 November 2021, a round table was held on the topic "The role of leading women in government and society" with the participation of women leaders of Uzbekistan, headed by the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva and the Executive Director of the Office United Nations on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Fathi Waly.
The event was attended by members of the Senate and deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, representatives of law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Support of the Mahalla and Family, as well as the UN.
The round table was opened with a welcoming speech by the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva and the Executive Director of the UNODC Ghada Fathi Waly.
The Chairperson of the Senate Tanzila Narbaeva, noting the measures taken by Uzbekistan to strengthen the role of women in the public life of the country, stressed that our country has joined all the main international documents that provide legal, social and economic protection of women from any forms of discrimination. The Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in Uzbekistan until 2030 was adopted.
UNODC Executive Director Ghada Fathi Waly praised the ongoing reforms in this direction in Uzbekistan, noting that the interests of women and girls underlie the normative, technical and analytical support provided by UNODC to member states in accordance with the UNODC Strategy for 2021-2025 and the Strategy for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
During the event, the role of parliament in empowering women in promoting the implementation of the requirements of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was discussed, as well as issues of ensuring their protection and empowerment, safety, development of effective strategies to protect health and improve economic provisions, development of approaches and solutions on gender aspects
They also exchanged views and experiences on gender equality, efforts in the fight against organized crime, corruption and terrorism, assistance in this to women leaders from all power structures in Uzbekistan.
In addition, speakers noted the inclusion of gender issues in existing partnership programs and a new strategy of Uzbekistan to increase the representation of women in government bodies involved in solving the problems of drugs, crime, terrorism and the fight against corruption.
Discussions identified priority areas for cooperation to achieve common goals of gender equality, the empowerment of women, and the fight against organized crime, corruption and terrorism.
