Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18 May 2021, during the plenary meeting of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, at the suggestion of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a special resolution was unanimously adopted on declaring the Aral Sea region a zone of environmental innovations and technologies.
The initiative of the head of Uzbekistan received broad support from the world community, as evidenced by the fact that about 60 states from various regions of the world co-sponsored the resolution.
In the adopted resolution, the UN General Assembly:
- declares its support for regional events and initiatives aimed at improving the environmental, social, economic and demographic situation in the Aral Sea region;
- encourages scientific and research advisory activities in the interests of further restoration and improvement of the environment, conservation of natural resources and improvement of the quality of life of the population;
- emphasizes the importance of intensifying regional cooperation in the implementation of joint measures to overcome the consequences of the Aral Sea crisis and stabilize the ecological situation in the region;
- calls on all stakeholders to conduct joint interdisciplinary research, develop and introduce environmentally friendly technologies, promote sustainable inclusive and environmentally sustainable economic growth and the use of energy and water saving technologies.
The document reflects the high appreciation and support of the UN for the creation, at the initiative of the Government of Uzbekistan, of the International Innovation Center of the Aral Sea region under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the establishment under the auspices of the UN of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea Region.
The Aral Sea region became the first region to which the General Assembly granted such a significant status - the Zone of Environmental Innovations and Technologies. The adoption of a special resolution of the UN General Assembly is aimed at joining efforts in order to create conditions and incentives for attracting investments in the development and implementation of high-tech innovations, environmentally friendly, energy and water saving technologies, the integrated application of the principles of a "green" economy, prevention of further desertification and environmental migration, development ecotourism and other measures.
The document will also allow to consolidate efforts and ensure coherence of programs and projects of specialized agencies, funds and programs of the UN system in support of the priorities of regional cooperation, integration and sustainable development.
