Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 8 September 2022, the first working day of the regular 14th summit of women leaders of the parliaments of the member states of the Inter-Parliamentary Union ended in Tashkent.
The Tashkent Summit is attended by women speakers of the UN, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the chambers of parliaments of the participating countries, heads of international organizations such as the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, more than 120 representatives of parliaments from about 20 states.
The theme of the Forum, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union jointly with the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, is “Parliamentary leadership: anticipating risks to more effectively ensure sustainability and prosperity.”
The main goal of the Summit is to prioritize the activities and actions of parliaments on gender equality and women’s empowerment in order to effectively ensure stability and prosperity, taking into account the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated crisis.
At the beginning of the event, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, Press Secretary of the President Sherzod Asadov read out the address of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the participants of this prestigious forum.
Opening the summit, the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Tanzila Narbayeva, in her opening speech, emphasized that all topics on the agenda are extremely relevant, are of great importance for the future fate of the countries of the world, the purpose of the forum is to develop constructive proposals to overcome serious social and economic crises caused by pandemic, in particular, new risks, identification of effective measures for their joint implementation.
The Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Duarte Pacheco, spoke and thanked for the fact that the Summit was organized at a high level, noting that the issues under consideration, the conclusions to be made serve to more effectively protect the rights and legitimate interests of women.
The work of the Forum is organized within the framework of two sessions on the topics: "Removing the risks hindering the global recovery after the pandemic" and "Prevention of risks associated with technology and protecting human rights and gender equality in the world of technology."
During the first session, the participants discussed the necessary measures for economic recovery in terms of sustainable development based on equality, inclusiveness and environmental protection, reducing the vulnerability of girls and women, including in the field of reproductive health, as well as best practices for economic recovery after the pandemic COVID-19.
During the second session, which continued into the afternoon, participants focused on such issues as initiatives to stimulate technological innovation in the digital economy and labor, to bridge the digital divide at the national and international levels in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the work of parliaments to promote and protect the rights and freedoms of women and girls online.
The summit will continue on 9 September.
