The Fifth World Conference of Leaders of Parliaments takes place

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 19-20 August 2020, the fifth World Conference of the heads of parliaments of the member states of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was held.

The forum was organized in cooperation with the United Nations in the format of videoconferencing. The summit was attended by heads of parliaments from 180 countries of the world. For the first time, the event was attended by a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanziley Narbaeva.

A large-scale international web forum aims to develop effective multilateral approaches to ensure peace and sustainable development at the global level.

The speakers noted that the topic of the conference now turned out to be more relevant than ever before. After all, the global pandemic has become an unprecedented test for all countries, including developed ones. In this context, the conference participants informed about the work carried out in their countries to develop and improve the public administration system by bridging the gap between the Parliament and the people.

The delegation of Uzbekistan also had the opportunity to talk about the course of socio-economic and socio-political transformations in the country. It was emphasized that today dialogue with the people is the main criterion for ensuring human rights and interests in Uzbekistan. In this context, in recent years, large-scale work has been carried out in the country to strengthen the role of parliament in the democratic modernization of the country, increase the accountability of the executive authorities, inform the population and responsible executors of the essence and content of the adopted laws, and their strict implementation.

During the discussions, the participants welcomed the country’s achievements in this area. It was noted that the experience of Uzbekistan in establishing an effective dialogue with the population, strengthening the role of women in the political and economic life of the country deserves attention. It was emphasized that it was Uzbekistan that was demonstrating tangible positive results in this direction.

Participants also discussed issues related to action to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the climate change emergency, building an inclusive and resilient economy in IPU member countries, and countering terrorism and violent extremism.

The World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments is an authoritative forum that takes place once every 5 years and is of great political importance for carrying out work to strengthen the positions of each state in the international arena and develop cooperation with the parliaments of other countries.

At the end of the virtual conference, a declaration was adopted, designed to be a strong message about parliamentary leadership and solidarity.
