The “Adolat” Party Proposed Tougher Penalties for Serious Traffic Violations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Social-Democratic Party “Adolat” has put forward an initiative to significantly toughen penalties for drivers who commit serious violations of traffic rules.

The party noted that last year, 9,364 traffic accidents occurred in Uzbekistan, resulting in nearly 9,000 injuries and 2,203 deaths. A significant proportion of the victims were children. Statistics indicate that in every fourth accident, at least one person dies, averaging six fatalities per day.

“These tragedies shock society as a whole, because they represent not only the personal grief of a single family but also the loss of the nation’s future. If residents, especially children, cannot feel safe on the roads, this should raise serious concern and demand immediate action,” the party stated.

To enhance road safety, “Adolat” proposes implementing the international Vision Zero program, aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities, as well as launching the “School Zone – Safe Territory” initiative. This program would establish secure pedestrian routes from home to school, provide younger students with brightly colored reflective vests, hats, or backpacks, and introduce special traffic restrictions near educational institutions.

The party also advocates increasing drivers’ economic responsibility by substantially raising insurance premiums for those who repeatedly violate traffic laws.

“Adolat” proposes harsher penalties for fatal accidents, particularly when a child is killed, and separate strict measures for speeding near schools. It suggests extending the revocation period for driving licenses due to speeding violations from three to ten years, and imposing lifetime license revocation for drivers involved in fatal accidents while under the influence of alcohol.

The “Adolat” faction in the Oliy Majlis announced its intention to submit the corresponding legislative initiative to implement these measures.
