Tashkent Urban Forum 2025: A Vision for the future of urban spaces

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Like many megacities around the world, Uzbekistan’s cities face significant challenges, ranging from chaotic urban development and the loss of architectural heritage to demographic growth, infrastructure strain, a shortage of green spaces, and air quality concerns. These and other pressing issues took center stage at the Second Tashkent Urban Forum, held on 27 February 2025.

Once again, the forum brought together experts, architects, urban planners, business leaders, and government representatives to discuss modern approaches to urban development and seek effective solutions to today’s challenges.

The event was organized by the Association of Young Architects of Uzbekistan in partnership with the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies under the Cabinet of Ministers and TBC Bank.

"The results of last year's forum demonstrated that interest in these topics extends beyond professionals to include the broader public, businesses, and government institutions. This underscores the importance of establishing a regular platform for discussing key urban issues, sharing best practices, and developing growth strategies," said Tahmina Turdialieva, Chair of the Association of Young Architects.

This year’s forum focused on the concept of creating comfortable and distinctive cities. Participants explored how to make urban environments not only functional but also convenient, psychologically comfortable, and socially engaging.

Special attention was given to preserving the unique identity of cities, enhancing their economic appeal, and addressing inclusivity, sustainable development, digitalization, and the integration of a "green" economy.

Experts proposed comprehensive approaches to designing urban spaces that are accessible and convenient for all social groups. They also discussed the introduction of advanced technologies and the role of urban environments in attracting investments and creating jobs.

A key highlight of the forum was the development of green spaces. One of the featured projects was the "Green Mahallas" initiative—eco-friendly districts that seamlessly blend nature with modern urbanism.

The event attracted both established professionals and young experts, fostering new talent and showcasing the significant potential of local specialists.

Among the forum’s speakers were Evgenia Pozigun, lead architect at Zaha Hadid Architects; Sardor Sadikov, co-founder of the Me’mors bureau; Aziz Hakimov, urban planner at TataLAB; and Ranay Utkelbaeva, director of the Association of Young Architects of Uzbekistan. Experts from the World Bank, GIZ, and other international organizations also shared their insights.

The forum also featured projects from the finalists of the "Salom, Shahar!" competition, organized by the Association in collaboration with TBC Bank. The competition aimed to find creative solutions for integrating advertising into the urban landscape in a way that enhances the city’s aesthetics. The best projects are set to be implemented in the near future, marking a significant step toward shaping a more harmonious image of Tashkent.
