Tandoors Destroyed in Andijan Region Amid Air Quality Inspections

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Shahrixan district of Andijan region, tandoors used for baking samsa were destroyed during inspections aimed at reducing air pollution. The initial report came from the district hokimiyat press service but was later removed along with photos and videos.

According to the original report, air quality enforcement raids were conducted around the clock under the directive of Andijan regional governor Shukhrat Abdurakhmanov. Footage published on 3 December showed excavators demolishing tandoors at three establishments: “Uch Arik Oshxonasi,” “Mehmon Oshxonasi,” and “Bek Oshxonasi.”

The hokimiyat statement indicated that inspection teams checked facilities contributing to pollution, applying strict measures—including temporary shutdowns—against food service and other businesses not meeting environmental standards.

Later, the Andijan regional administration stated that Shahrixan district hokim Hikmatillo Dadakhanov, who allowed the unauthorized demolitions, was officially reprimanded. The administration emphasized that educational work had been carried out to prevent similar incidents.

Inspections also covered sanitary compliance at markets and proper use of gas cylinders, resulting in some establishments being sealed and gas cylinders confiscated.

Enhanced air quality enforcement raids have been ongoing in Tashkent and other regions for over a week. Inspection teams, including environmental and law enforcement officials, are checking unfiltered greenhouses, tire burning sites, and violations in the food service sector. In the capital, restaurants failing smoke emission standards are being held accountable.

Environmental activists and public figures have warned that strict enforcement could lead to unintended consequences. Saida Mirziyoeva, head of the Presidential Administration, recently visited a coal-heated greenhouse in Kibrai district and emphasized that businesses must act responsibly and environmental damage cannot be justified by profit. She also highlighted the importance of supporting entrepreneurs to operate legally and safely, including through subsidies.
