Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- At the 27th plenary session of the Senate, the Law "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was discussed.

The senators noted that in recent years a number of practical measures have been taken in our country to gradually modernize state power and the electoral system when holding elections to representative bodies of state power on the principles of openness, transparency and independence.

This is recognized by a number of international organizations, on the recommendations of which the Electoral Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan has been amended and supplemented accordingly.

This Law stipulates the introduction of amendments and additions to the Electoral Code, the laws "On the status of a deputy of the regional, district and city Kengash of people’s deputies", "On the administrative-territorial structure of the Republic of Uzbekistan" and "On the referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan".

In particular, the Law "On the status of a deputy of the regional, district and city Kengash of people’s deputies" establishes that in the event of the transfer of the territory of an electoral district to another administrative-territorial unit or the formation of a new administrative-territorial unit on its territory, the powers of a deputy elected from this constituency are preserved.

At the same time, the deputy is a member of the Kengash of People’s Deputies, on the territory of which the electoral district is located, or the Kengash of People’s Deputies, formed on a newly formed administrative-territorial unit, and the term of office of the deputy is brought into line with the term of office of this Kengash of people’s deputies.

And the Electoral Code establishes the norms for determining the number of electoral districts for holding elections to the local Kengash of People’s Deputies of a newly formed administrative-territorial unit and the formation of these electoral districts, election commissions, and holding elections.

In addition, through amendments to the Law “On the Referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan”, the procedure for consideration by referendum commissions of applications from individuals and legal entities, the inclusion of citizens located in foreign states in the lists of voting citizens, the circle of persons who cannot be members of the referendum commission.

It was noted that as a result of the adoption of the Law, legal regulation of relations related to the possibility of including a deputy in the composition of the corresponding local Kengash and the continuation of his term of office in the formation of administrative-territorial units or changing the boundaries of administrative-territorial units, establishing the number of constituencies for holding elections in local Kengashes in the newly formed administrative-territorial unit and the formation of these electoral districts, as well as the formation of election commissions, as well as the holding of elections of deputies of local Kengashes in the newly formed administrative-territorial units will be put into place.

The law was approved by the senators.
