The Uzbek Agency for Automobile and River Transport said it is studying demands of population in public transport to improve quality of services. In 2013, some 181 public transport routes were opened compared to 95 planned.
Major part of them was opened in rural areas. About 97.9% of new bus routes were planed via open tenders, which helped to develop competition in public transport market.
The agency said that there were 2,000 bus routes in 2000 and now their number exceeds 4,280 bus routes. About 1,009 routes are in city, 2,631 run in city suburbs and 640 – long distance routes. In 2013, 133 open tenders were held, which placed 1,107 passenger routes.
