Situation in Afghanistan discussed with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 25 August 2021, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate S. Safoev took part in an online meeting of the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (PA OSCE) M. Sederfeld with the heads of permanent delegations of parliaments of Central Asian countries in the OSCE PA.

The event was attended by Deputy Chairman of the OSCE PA, Special Representative of the Assembly for Central Asia and Mongolia P. Kauma, Secretary General of the OSCE PA R. Montella, heads of OSCE missions in Central Asia.

Within the framework of the meeting, a substantive discussion of issues related to the situation in Afghanistan, assistance in the evacuation of foreign citizens from the country and the role of the OSCE in ensuring security in the Central Asian region took place.

The parties also exchanged views on the mechanisms for the participation of OSCE structures in resolving the situation in Afghanistan, establishing a systemic inter-parliamentary dialogue on the development of the situation in Afghanistan, as well as taking prompt measures to prevent the "overflow of threats" to adjacent territories.

In turn, the chairman of the OSCE PA M. Sederfeld highly appreciated the constructive and consistent position of Uzbekistan on the settlement of the situation in Afghanistan. She welcomed the initiatives of Tashkent to maximize the use of the mechanisms of parliamentary diplomacy in stabilizing the situation in this country and ensuring the security of the Central Asian states. She emphasized the readiness of the OSCE for close cooperation with Uzbekistan.

As a result of the event, the parties agreed to strengthen regional cooperation in the field of security, as well as implement programs to strengthen border control.
