Shavkat Mirziyoyev: “It Is Important to Bring ‘Living’ History to the People”

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 29 August, a solemn ceremony was held at the “Shahidlar Hotirasi” Alley to mark the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Repression, observed annually in Uzbekistan on the eve of Independence Day.

The event was attended by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, representatives of government and public organizations, figures from science and culture, and veterans.

In memory of the devoted sons of the Motherland, passages from the Quran were recited and a commemorative meal of plov was served. At a symbolic grave, discussions took place with scholars and public figures about the importance of studying historical heritage and fostering patriotism, peace, and respect for the country’s independence among the youth.

Speaking at the ceremony, the head of state emphasized that the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Repression symbolizes gratitude to those who dreamed of freedom and fought for it, giving their lives for the sake of future generations.

The President stressed that the tragic chapters of history, when over 100,000 innocent citizens were persecuted and thousands were executed or exiled during the years of repression, should serve as a lesson and a reminder of the value of peace and independence.

In recent years, the country has undertaken significant work to honor the memory of ancestors: more than 1,200 names of repressed individuals have been rehabilitated, the Museum of Remembrance for Victims of Repression has been reconstructed and expanded with new exhibits, and similar museums are being established across the regions. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahmudkhodji Behbudi, a leader of the Jadid movement, and a State Museum of Jadid Heritage is being established in Bukhara.

Since last year, the first week of October has been designated as the Week of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression, which in 2025 is being observed as the Week of Remembrance and Education. During this week, lessons will be held in schools and universities, alongside television programs, competitions, and educational events aimed at young people.

The President particularly emphasized the importance of studying the lives and contributions of the Jadids—educators and reformers who played a significant role in the development of literature, theater, cinema, and education. Their examples should serve as a source of pride and inspiration for the younger generation.

The ceremony concluded with prayers for peace, harmony, and well-being in the country.
