Senators take under control reports on death of prisoner

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - These days, an article titled “A prisoner died in Kashkadarya prison. Did he really hang himself?” has been published in one online edition. 

This article says that one of the convicts serving a sentence in Kashkadarya region, on the eve of his transfer to the colony-settlement of Namangan region, where he was born and raised, committed suicide on 28 March by hanging himself with a telephone cable on the partition of the warehouse of the production enterprise of the colony No. 2 departments of the execution of punishments of the Internal Affairs Directorate of Kashkadarya region, and the relatives of the deceased are skeptical about the official version of his suicide. 

According to the mother of the deceased M. Botirova, Sh. Azamov died on 26 March in the prison of Shaikhalikurgan district of the city of Karshi, where he was serving his sentence.

The administration of the institution indicated “suicide” as the cause of death. But the relatives and mother of the deceased, after they examined the body, suspected that he had hanged himself. And when they wanted to conduct a second examination, they were refused, as they were told that an examination of the corpse had already been carried out, and they did not conduct a second examination.

According to the information provided by the employees of the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the prosecutor’s office of Kashkadarya region is carrying out investigative actions.

In this regard, the Senate Committee on Judicial and Legal Issues and Anti-Corruption asks the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan to take control of it and carefully study it, as well as make an official statement on its results.
