Senate Discusses Agricultural Development and Implementation of Scientific Advances
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At a plenary session, the Senate reviewed the results of a parliamentary inquiry submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan regarding agricultural development, strengthening the material and technical base of research institutes, and the introduction of scientific achievements into the agro-industrial sector.
It was noted that under state programs of the National Center for Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture, operating under the Ministry of Agriculture, 69 research projects with a total value of 49.7 billion soums are being implemented in 2025. These include 49 applied, 7 innovative, 1 fundamental, and 12 international projects.
In the first half of the year, 13 research projects were carried out using the “household-based” method, aimed at expanding employment and increasing income through research and experimental design work. Promising and newly developed varieties of cotton created by research institutes were sown on 909,000 hectares of irrigated land, while more than 70 new varieties underwent preliminary testing at regional stations and experimental seed farms.
Research institutes have developed 271 varieties, breeds, or hybrids, of which 107 have been included in the State Register, 99 introduced into production, and the results of 73 projects worth 82.7 billion soums successfully commercialized.
At the same time, senators noted ongoing challenges, including the need to improve institutional foundations of the regulatory framework, enhance the efficiency of introducing new varieties and hybrids, and ensure timely dissemination of scientific developments and innovations to producers.
They also highlighted insufficient funding for young scientists to develop research projects, conduct experiments, and cover operating costs, which contributes to high staff turnover. Senators stressed the importance of increased focus on modern biotechnological and molecular-genetic research, as well as on issues related to global climate change.
Following the discussion, the Senate adopted a corresponding resolution.
