As you know, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly proposed to adopt a special resolution of the UN General Assembly on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing the role of parliaments in ensuring human rights. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, this initiative of the head of state was supported.
The meeting also approved the holding of the 14th summit of women speakers of national parliaments in Uzbekistan this year together with the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The fact that this summit is the first of its kind in Uzbekistan and Central Asia as a whole is recognition by the world parliamentary community of the country’s achievements in the development of parliamentarism, its achievements in gender policy, achievements in the democratization of society.
The 14th Summit of Women Speakers of National Parliaments is a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as communication and cooperation between leading women. The previous summit was held in Vienna in September 2021 and was dedicated to mitigating the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Considering that Uzbekistan chaired the Dialogue of Women Leaders in Central Asia, it is logical and justified that Uzbekistan was chosen to host the next summit of women speakers.
At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, issues related to the preparations for the 144th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which will be held this year in Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia, were considered. Confidence was expressed that the upcoming conference will be of great importance in terms of ensuring democracy and promoting inter-parliamentary dialogue throughout the world.
It is expected that the 144th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will discuss, among other things, the prospects for further development of efforts at the international level in raising the awareness of the world community about climate change and encouraging the efforts of parliamentarians from various political parties to find a solution to this problem. In these matters, as noted by the participants, the Inter-Parliamentary Union plays an important role.
Environmental challenges know no boundaries, and it is only natural that each country’s efforts to address climate change alone will not be as effective as expected. In this sense, the need to create a single international coalition to combat climate change with the participation of the countries of the world and all international organizations remains relevant.
At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the political project of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the UN was considered. The historic partnership between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations began 20 years ago. In the past, both influential international organizations have always been partners and like-minded people in conscientious fulfillment of their duties, support of other international organizations, striving for common goals.
The goals and objectives of both international organizations are largely consistent and harmonious. They have many opportunities for mutual exchange of technologies and experience. In this context, the political project of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the UN will help to identify important areas for future cooperation between the two international organizations.
The meeting of the Executive Committee also heard the report of the Working Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on Transparency, Accountability and Transparency. The Working Group was created as a result of an independent study by the Inter-Parliamentary Union on Transparency, Accountability and Conflict Prevention.
