Regional roundtable to discuss prevention of statelessness in Central Asia

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 26 March 2021, at the initiative of Uzbekistan, a regional round table will be held on the reduction and prevention of statelessness in Central Asia.

The online discussion is organized as part of the implementation of the obligations of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the implementation of the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan put forward at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council, as well as in order to support the call of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to take decisive measures to reduce the number of stateless persons.

The event is expected to be attended by representatives dealing with statelessness issues of the relevant state bodies of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, including the ministries of foreign affairs, internal affairs, justice, state migration and registration services, state committees on statistics, as well as national institutions on rights and civil society organizations dealing with citizenship and statelessness issues in the region.

The purpose of the round table is to review international standards in the field of reducing and preventing statelessness, assessing overall progress towards eradicating statelessness in Central Asia in the context of the #IBelong global campaign to eliminate statelessness, reviewing the results of the High-level Segment on Statelessness Issues and implementation progress commitments undertaken by the countries of Central Asia.

An exchange of best practices and important achievements in the region is planned, as well as discussion of existing gaps and necessary legislative amendments, revision of practices that do not correspond to the modern level.
