President Reviews Project to Launch Smart Traffic Management System in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 3 December, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on improving traffic management and reducing congestion in Tashkent.

In recent years, the capital has implemented several major public transport initiatives. The bus fleet has nearly doubled to about 1,900 vehicles, reducing intervals between buses from 30 to 15 minutes. Daily passenger traffic has reached 1.4 million people.

The metro system continues to expand, with the total length of underground and aboveground lines increasing to 70.5 km and the number of stations rising from 29 to 50. The metro now serves 900,000 passengers daily.

Efforts to improve road traffic organization have also accelerated: 2,870 road signs were replaced, 2,770 new ones installed, and 55 traffic lights added.

Despite these efforts, population growth, the rising number of vehicles, and economic activity have significantly increased the burden on transport infrastructure. In recent years, traffic on main thoroughfares has doubled, with congestion levels of 7–8 becoming common. The share of trips made by public transport still lags behind private vehicles, affecting the city’s environmental situation.

Globally, one of the most effective tools for traffic management is an Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which provides centralized real-time monitoring and control of road traffic.

The presentation proposed establishing a unified Traffic Management Center in Tashkent to implement ITS. The Center will focus on:

  • Analyzing and modeling vehicle and pedestrian flows;
  • Implementing and managing a single intelligent transport system;
  • Developing and executing a transport master plan;
  • Organizing urban parking;
  • Expanding infrastructure for electric vehicle charging;
  • Promoting the use of personal mobility devices.

The ITS will integrate data from cameras, sensors, and GPS devices, use artificial intelligence for analysis, predict traffic jams, optimize routes, adapt traffic light phases, and automatically notify emergency services in the event of accidents.

The system is expected to reduce travel time, accelerate emergency response, and decrease congestion and accidents on major roads.

President Mirziyoyev approved the proposals, instructing authorities to launch a pilot project this year, gradually expand it in the coming years, and integrate the system nationwide by 2030.
