President proposes to introduce a provision on the prohibition of the death penalty in Uzbekistan into the Constitution

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed to introduce into the Constitution a provision on the prohibition of the death penalty in Uzbekistan as a capital punishment.

During a meeting with members of the constitutional commission on the formation of proposals for amending the Basic Law of the country, the head of Uzbekistan noted that the right to life was given to a person by God, and not by the state. He stated that it is necessary to ban the death penalty in the country.

According to the President, historical experience shows that the dignity of a person is primarily expressed in his right to life.

“This is one of our greatest and most sacred values. We have abolished this type of punishment, gradually preventing the crimes for which execution is imposed. However, some citizens are proposing to restore the death penalty and reintroduce it into criminal law,” Mirziyoyev added.

The head of Uzbekistan stressed that in most countries of the world that have raised democratic and humanistic ideas to the highest level, the death penalty has been abolished.

The President noted that the right to life is the natural right of every person, and this right was given to him by God, and not by the state.
