Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has proposed introducing criminal liability for illicit enrichment of public officials and has instructed the submission of a draft law on income declaration by 1 April.

Speaking at an extended meeting of the National Council for Combating Corruption, the head of state emphasized the urgency of adopting the law, highlighting the importance of considering public opinion in the process.

The President ordered that the draft law be put up for public discussion and submitted within the designated timeframe. Additionally, he proposed amending legislation to include a provision on illicit enrichment, requiring officials to prove the lawful origin of assets disproportionate to their declared income.

Mirziyoyev also called on the National Council and parliamentary committees to develop proposals on this matter in line with international standards.

Previously, the International Monetary Fund recommended that Uzbekistan adopt laws on asset declaration and conflict of interest. In June 2023, the President signed a law on conflict of interest, which came into force on December 6.
