Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan has not yet elected a new chairman of the Muslim Board, the country’s chief mufti. This was reported by the press service of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan.
The Board noted that information has spread on social networks that Nuriddin Kholiknazarov has been appointed the new chairman of the Muslim Board, the country’s chief mufti.
The agency denied this report. Nuriddin Kholiknazarov still works as the chief imam-khatib of Tashkent, the Muslims Board of Uzbekistan notes.
The Board recalled that the chairman of the Muslim Board is elected at a meeting of the Council of Ulema for a term of five years. The process of selection of candidates for this post is underway.
On 15 August 2021, at the age of 71, the chairman of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, Mufti Usmonkhon Alimov, died. He was treated for pneumonia in Moscow for several weeks.
