Meeting dedicated to the International Day of the Girls takes place

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 10 October 2020, the Commission on Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Commission on Gender Equality of the Youth Parliament under the Senate of the Oliy Majlis held a meeting dedicated to the International Day of Girls.

The event was attended by the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Chairman of the Commission for Ensuring Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva.

The meeting was also attended by the heads of a number of ministries and departments, universities.

Since 2012, the United Nations has declared 11 October International Girls’ Day, which aims to draw the attention of the world community to the problem of discrimination against girls in different countries. Uniting and directing the efforts of the peoples of the world to create opportunities for girls to receive education, ensure their social and political rights, and access to medical services is also the goal of this date.

Today, in our country, all conditions are being created to strengthen the health of our girls, to receive a full-fledged education, to train them in the professions they are interested in, to realize their abilities, and to carry out entrepreneurial activities.

In particular, in the field of health care, measures are being consistently taken to ensure the healthy growth of girls from childhood, and to increase their medical literacy.

Particular attention is paid to their education. So, this year special additional quotas for admission to universities have been introduced for them. In order to create opportunities for girls striving for knowledge to obtain higher education in the 2019/2020 academic year, correspondence courses have been established in 59 universities. This has become a very important opportunity especially for girls and women living in rural areas.

In order to protect girls from problems associated with early marriage, the same minimum age for marriage is set for men and women - 18 years. In general, systematic work is underway in Uzbekistan to establish comprehensive support for women and regular monitoring is carried out in this direction. As a result, the number of women who have received state awards of various degrees in recent years has reached 2,224.

Of the 339 women who were awarded the Zulfiya State Prize, 10 work in the state power system, 30 in various ministries, departments and organizations, and 70 in the management apparatus of the education system.

During the meeting, they talked about these and other achievements and noted that the rational use of existing opportunities also depends on the girls themselves. In this regard, the participants of the event called on young people to be purposeful and proactive, always work on themselves, learn and master new professions. Suggestions were made for further improvement of the work carried out in this direction.
