Marking Milestones of Cooperation: 50 Years of the Helsinki Final Act and 30 Years of OSCE Presence in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan hosted an event commemorating two significant milestones: the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Helsinki Final Act, the foundational document of the Organization, and the 30th anniversary of OSCE’s presence in Uzbekistan.

The event brought together representatives from government institutions, the diplomatic corps, international and civil society organizations, as well as long-term partners to review collaborative achievements and reaffirm shared commitments.

The Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Ambassador Terhi Hakala, emphasized that the ideas and values of the Helsinki Final Act, signed 50 years ago, remain highly relevant today:

"Marking this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to the spirit and principles of the Helsinki Final Act. Contemporary challenges—whether geopolitical, environmental, or social—require unity and close regional cooperation. Uzbekistan, playing a key role in regional diplomacy and reform efforts, continues to be our essential partner in this process."

In his remarks, Ambassador Antti Karttunen, OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan, highlighted the Organization’s important role in the country over the past three decades:

"For the past 30 years, the OSCE has closely cooperated with Uzbekistan, supporting reforms, strengthening state institutions, and promoting human rights and security. While we celebrate this important anniversary today, our main focus must be on the future. The role of youth in building a sustainable and just society is indispensable—their engagement and support are crucial."

The event underscored a continued commitment to advancing OSCE principles in Uzbekistan and the wider regional context.
