Legislative Chamber ratifies 1963 Vienna Convention on nuclear safety

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis have approved the law on Uzbekistan’s accession to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, adopted in Vienna on 21 May 1963, according to the press service of the lower house of parliament.

The Convention regulates the liability regime, procedures, deadlines, and principles for compensating damage arising from incidents at civil nuclear facilities.

It establishes clear obligations for nuclear installation operators and provides for the creation of reliable financial guarantees to cover potential damage. Moreover, the document promotes increased trust in the national nuclear safety system, strengthens international cooperation, and ensures compliance with widely accepted norms and standards in nuclear safety.

The Convention also enshrines operator liability for damage caused at facilities under their control and sets minimum requirements for financial protection against nuclear damage.

Deputies emphasized that ratification of this international treaty will allow Uzbekistan to officially confirm its rights and responsibilities in the field of nuclear safety and provide guarantees for compensation in case of possible nuclear damage.
