Kamilov: “Central Asia+” Platforms Reflect Growing Regional Agency and Global Recognition

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Abdulaziz Kamilov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council under the President of Uzbekistan and Special Representative of the President for Foreign Policy, spoke in an interview with Ishonch.uz about the rapidly expanding international cooperation under the “Central Asia+” format, with a particular focus on ties with the European Union.

He emphasized that, for the first time in history, the countries of Central Asia are presenting themselves on the international stage as a unified actor. This emerging cohesion and agency, he noted, is gaining recognition from the global community. Against this backdrop, an increasing number of cooperation platforms are being established—now exceeding ten—including dialogue formats with leading countries and international organizations.

Kamilov highlighted the significance of the recent EU–Central Asia Summit held in Samarkand, calling it a milestone in deepening strategic partnership. The summit concluded with the signing of a joint declaration of intent, reaffirming a mutual commitment to comprehensive and long-term cooperation.

“Regional policies of Central Asian countries are grounded in pragmatism,” the diplomat stated. “Consider the contrast: we are five states, while the EU has 28. The EU’s total GDP exceeds 19 trillion dollars. We proceed based on realities and pursue practical interests. Regardless of how this is perceived externally, we will continue on the path of expanding partnerships.”

Kamilov noted that Central Asia’s constructive regional model is attracting growing international interest and respect. “Many respected experts and policymakers view Central Asia as a potential model for successful neighborly cooperation. The very notion of regional agency—built on good-neighborliness and mutual respect—is becoming a solid foundation for deepening intergovernmental collaboration,” he said.

He also recalled that the concept of regional identity and independence is increasingly echoed on global platforms. In particular, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev once again underscored this point in his address at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

The inaugural EU–Central Asia Summit took place on April 4 in Samarkand, attended by European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the heads of all five Central Asian nations. During the meeting, both sides formally announced a shift toward a strategic partnership format, identified key areas for cooperation, and signed agreements on financial support.

The European Commission pledged €12 billion across four priority areas, including €10 billion specifically allocated for the development of the Trans-Caspian transport corridor.
