Jeffrey Sachs Participates in SDG Monitoring Seminar in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 8–9 July 2025, Uzbekistan is hosting a training seminar organized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance with the support of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the French Development Agency (AFD).

The event focuses on “Enhancing SDG Monitoring Capacity in the Regions of Uzbekistan.” A key highlight of the forum was the participation of SDSN President, Columbia University professor, and renowned global economist Jeffrey Sachs.

During his lecture, Professor Sachs elaborated on the major global challenges countries face in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and he praised Uzbekistan's efforts in this direction.

He emphasized the importance of establishing and strengthening monitoring systems at the regional level, noting the progress Uzbekistan has made in implementing the sustainable development agenda and highlighting the need for deeper international cooperation.

Participants in the event included Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Umid Abidkhodjaev, AFD Deputy Director Antoine Chevalier, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Sabina Mahl, as well as representatives from government agencies, academic institutions, and international organizations.

The seminar featured an in-depth presentation on the essence and objectives of the SDGs and Uzbekistan’s achievements in this area. According to the latest Global SDG Index, Uzbekistan ranks 62nd worldwide, with an average score of 73.1 — above the regional average of 72.0. This reflects a positive trajectory since 2015, with a gain of 12.1 points.

Discussions at the seminar covered the development of specialized digital platforms for SDG monitoring, integration of geospatial data, use of modern statistical tools, and coordination efforts in food security and sustainable land management.

At the conclusion of the event, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, Professor Sachs, and AFD. The document outlines the implementation of a joint project to develop a regional-level SDG monitoring system.

The Uzbek side regards these agreements as a significant step toward the country’s sustainable and inclusive development and reaffirms its commitment to expanding international partnerships in this field.
