It became known how much water each of the Central Asian countries will receive in 2023 from the Amudarya and Syrdarya basins

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The water withdrawal limits of the countries of Central Asia were approved back in November last year in Ashgabat during a meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission (ICWC), ASIA-Plus news agency reported.

According to the limit, in just one year (from 1 October 2022 to 1 October 2023), water withdrawal from the Amudarya basin should amount to 55.4 billion cubic meters, of which 15.7 billion are in the non-vegetation period (until 1 April 2023).

Under this agreement, Tajikistan will receive 9.8 billion cubic meters of water, Uzbekistan - about 23.6 billion, Turkmenistan - 22 billion.

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan agreed with Tajikistan on the supply of water during the irrigation season

The water withdrawal limit from Syrdarya basin is 4.2 billion cubic meters, of which Tajikistan will receive 365 million cubic meters, Uzbekistan - 3.3 billion, Kazakhstan - 452 million, Kyrgyzstan - 47 million cubic meters.

It is noted that the water content of the Amudarya basin during the growing season of 2022 was rather ambiguous: if in April-May it was within the normal range, then from June it decreased to 85-65%, and remained below the norm until the end of the period.

In the current water management situation, the total water used in the basin was 79.1% of the total limit, including Tajikistan actually used 95.3%, Turkmenistan - 83.3%, Uzbekistan - 68.7% of the allocated norm.

Water withdrawals from the Syrdarya basin from 1 April to 30 September 2022 amounted to 10.1 billion cubic meters with a limit of 11.8 billion. Including Tajikistan used more than 1.5 billion with a limit of 1.9 billion cubic meters.

The next 84th ICWC meeting will be held in Dushanbe in April 2023, where issues of water supply during the growing season of the new agricultural season will be additionally discussed.
