Issues of parliamentary control over budget and funding in the security sector discussed

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 3 June 2021, a seminar was held to discuss issues of parliamentary control over the budget and financing in the security sector of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The seminar, organized by the OSCE, was attended by members of the Senate and deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, employees of the OSCE Communist Party in Uzbekistan, foreign experts.

Participants discussed the basic principles and subjects of financial oversight in the security sector, the role of parliament at different stages of the budget cycle, the use of parliamentary powers and financial oversight instruments, and security procurement.

It was noted that financial control is a key tool for ensuring transparency, efficiency and accountability in the use of funds allocated to government agencies, including in the security sector. The adoption of the Parliamentary Oversight Law, in 2016, indicates that Uzbekistan is taking decisive steps to increase transparency and accountability.

This seminar is a continuation of the first meeting of newly elected deputies of the Oliy Majlis with speakers from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, as well as the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which took place in October 2020.
