Issues of gender equality and empowerment of women discussed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 7 April, Chairwoman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva took part online in an international roundtable on the topic: Accelerators for gender equality and empowerment of women in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic". The event is organized by UN Women.

In her report, the Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis focused the attention of the participants on policy issues for the new generation, actions and investments to overcome inequality and violence as part of the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In particular, it was emphasized that in Uzbekistan the issues of ensuring gender equality and supporting women and girls were elevated to the rank of state policy. In recent years, under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, dynamic reforms have been carried out aimed at improving the position of women in society, increasing their status and social inclusion.

A mandatory gender-legal review of all adopted normative legal acts has been introduced. As a key area of the Development Strategy of New Uzbekistan for 2022-2026, issues of supporting women and further increasing their social and political activity are identified. The National Program for 2022-2026 is being implemented to support women’s education, develop women’s entrepreneurship and train them in popular professions, and provide health services.

The State Committee for Family and Women Affairs was established as a government body to promote women’s rights, empower them, and eradicate violence against women.

All these measures confirm the commitment of our country to the issues of gender equality and increasing the socio-political activity of women.

Within the framework of the "round table" speeches and reports of specialists, experts and representatives of NGOs from a number of foreign countries dealing with gender equality issues were also heard.
