Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 3 November 2020, an online meeting was held to discuss a new joint project of the UN Development Program with the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan "Enhancing the role of parliament in ensuring the effective implementation of reforms and national SDGs."

It was attended by the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva, First Deputy Chairperson of the Senate Sodik Safoev, UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan Matilda Dimovska, OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan Ambassador John McGregor and other officials.

It was noted that parliaments around the world are playing an increasingly important role in supporting and monitoring the implementation of the sustainable development goals. It was emphasized that today UN structures are actively cooperating in this direction with the committees of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis. 

An important step in this direction will also be a new project aimed at supporting the institutional capacity aimed at ensuring the effectiveness and accountability of reforms in the field of sustainable development, as well as further improving legislation in this direction.

Attention was focused on the fact that strengthening the activities of the Parliament of Uzbekistan will become an important factor of integration and social cohesion in the process of reforms and improvement of the situation related to the pandemic.

A number of activities are planned within the framework of the project. These include conducting a series of trainings for parliamentarians using a special methodology, building institutional capacity to promote and monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and preparing a parliamentary action plan to achieve the SDGs.

During the meeting, it was noted that the new joint project is in line with the priorities of the national development strategy for 2017-2021 and will serve to further strengthen the role of parliament in monitoring progress in achieving the SDGs and national sustainable development goals.
